BiSn42: favourable lead-free low-melting alloy with advantages
This cheap alloy has a higher melting temperature than Roses metal, but does not contain toxic lead. It is a good alternative to Roses metal as it has very similar properties. The moulds can be poured out easily and result in fine-grained castings. Due to the higher hardness, the casts are quite stable even in very thin areas. However, due to the brittleness, the cold formability is very poor and tends to break. This alloy also expands during hardening, which makes the castings precise and of high quality.
The components and properties of BiSn42
As the name suggests, BiSn42 consists of 58% bismuth and 42% tin. The melting point is 138°C and the density 8.74g·cm−3.
